Avenging Knights of the Inscribed Hearts

The Chapel of this Peerage is in the city of Rath in the kingdom of the same name.

The Avenging Knights exist to mete justice to those who have unrighteously killed Priests and Consecrated Women, as well the Poor, the Widowed, the Orphaned, and unguarded, unarmed members of the faith. They will also seek vengeance on those who damage church property or make target of holy buildings.

The Red Avengers keep the One-score rule:
  1. We will first obey whatsoever is lawful and good.
  2. We will wear foremost the armor of obedience to the Order.
  3. We will be armed foremost with the sword of divine judgment.
  4. We will recognize our charges as these: the poor, widows, orphans, churches and clerics.
  5. We will not own more than two steeds.
  6. We will keep no pet nor patron nor paramour.
  7. We will adorn ourselves with no ornament beyond the red ink of our inscribed hearts.
  8. We will occupy ourselves with no reading beyond the Canons.
  9. We will divert ourselves with no games of chance beyond the risk of death in battle.
  10. We will practice no trade nor skill save the preparation of war.
  11. We will not drink except it be water or medicine or the ceremonial wine.
  12. We will never speak poorly of a charge, nor permit a man to do so unchallenged.
  13. We will take no children as squires for they cannot be protected if led into harm.
  14. We will each sponsor a pauper person with our wealth.
  15. We will each sponsor a widow with our wealth.
  16. We will each sponsor an orphan with our wealth.
  17. We will each sponsor a church with our wealth.
  18. We will each sponsor a cleric with our wealth.
  19. We will eat no more than what is necessary to heal and live.
  20. We will be found in a church or holy place each Sunsday.

The symbol of the Peerage is a ring of thorns dipped in blood.

A List of the Cities and Provinces of Westrun by Kingdom

There are two basic political subdivisions in Westrun. The first is the Province and the second is the City. Both of them pay tribute to their monarch.

The Provinces vary in size and composition, but all are ruled a lord who is vested in it and responsible for it to the King. The lord may be a minor noble as a baron, a middling noble as a count or a greater noble as a Duke. Sometimes a lord who holds a province on the border of another Realm is considered a Margrave. If the lord of a province is a King in his own right, he is considered a Prince of any other province over which his royal prerogative does not extend. The lord of a province is considered the highest authority there. They have the unlimited chartered power to lay and collect taxes from their residents, to license marriages and other enterprises, as well as to keep the peace on their lands. They also enjoy the right to a trial before their peers and cannot be divested from their land except for cause and then only by trial.

Freeborn men and those who have been liberated from the role of serfs or slaves often find themselves settling around the open-air markets that rise at crossroads and near common river fords. With the permission of a lord they may settle a town on his land which still falls under the jurisdiction of his Reeve and must draw up a contract to pay him taxes and/or rent.

Once a town is in place and has grown to the size of 1000 free men (usually 3-5000 people), they can petition their monarch to fortify the town with a wall. Upon entertaining the petition, the king holds a hearing at which the populace and their lord have the right to be heard. If the hearing finds for the populace, the town contract is replaced by a royal charter. The town then becomes a city, independent of the rule of the lord whose land it was. The city then pays a tribute to the King as any province might. The city also gains the right to enforce its own laws, tax its own citizens, and elect its own mayor. Anyone born in a city is considered a free man, regardless of his parent's social class or condition of servitude. City air makes men free!

The History of Larcus IV

This is the history of Larcus IV the Liberator.

Larcus of Rath was sentenced to the high throne in 4950ey succeeding Gelder II.

Larcus ruled while his father, Larcus III, still sat upon the throne of his own realm, Rath. This remained a source of great controversy throughout his first sentence, for while his father had first abdicated in favor of the son, once the latter was seated upon the High Throne the father took up his crown again. This lead many to assume that Larcus IV would be a puppet of the designs of the King of Rath. It was not to be, however.

Larcus proved himself a fair and just High King, brokering great peace with the Eastrun bandits and opening trade to the many princes of Southrun.

Larcus sired but one child, a son. He ruled through three sentences until 4980ey. He was succeeded by Dane Gladfiolas.

Larcus died along with his father in a tragic hunting accident in the year 4986ey after having returned peaceably to Rath.

Kingdom of Rath

Name: The Kingdom of Rath

Ruler: Larcus Gregoras, King of Rath, Prince of the Free Province of Ilesia, Warden of Old Sakaria.

Government: A hereditary monarchy -- autocratic rule by a leader with blood ties to the ruling family.

Population:

Description: This kingdom is one of the five traditional Northern Kingdoms of Westrun. It is officially a vassal kingdom of the High King, but within its own borders, its monarch operates with near absolute authority and autonomy and maintains a layered feudal society.

Aside from the royalty, the kingdom is served by the power held by class of nobles (barons, counts, and dukes) who create wealth and provide tribute to support the crown. Beneath the nobles are free Gentlemen, Ladies and Knights. Beneath them are the freeholders, tradesmen, tenant farmers and artisans who make up the yeomanry. Beneath them are serfs who are tied to the land of a given baron. Slavery is out of vogue by an edict of the church that carries a great deal of weight in polite society.

In addition to the political structures in place, some power in the kingdom is vested in a multitude of organized guilds, the church and the various colleges of mages within its borders.

Rath is known for its cotton fields and also for its wine, but is most famous for its Rath Meat or the smoked meats and sausages from the widespread domestication of pigs and chickens.

City of Rath

The City of Rath is located in the Kingdom of Rath in the Land of Westrun. It is the capital city of that ancient monarchy.

Far and wide, Rath has the reputation of...

Like Peakshadow, legend has it that Rath had the first of its walls built as a gift from Dwarves. Little remains of that original city, save the central keep. Much has been accreted since those times of old. Rath has become a sprawling metropolis of walls and fortifications in its own right. Built over a period of several centuries, the city has a squarish look with each successive addition being added upon the last in the same fashion. Rath has nearly 80,000 residents.

Most famously, it is home to King Gregoras and Melf the Wizard.
