The Red Death is a malady easily identified by the swollen and scarlet rash or "mask" that appears around the eyes and across the nose of the diseased. It has only ever been recorded in human and half-human patients.
Red Death's onset is marked by the increasing inability to get restful sleep and eventually any sleep at all. Within ten days of contracting the illness, patients will stop being able to get a decent nights rest and will lose all professional and personal benefits from doing so. The only healing that occurs in a person afflicted must come about by magical means, but even that benefit is reduced.
Red Death is the scourge of long travelers and itinerant workers alike. While its exact cause is unknown, it is believed to be an affliction of the mind caused by frequently interrupted sleep, long hours of travel, poor bathing habits, oft suffered wounds and a paucity of clean water, good nutrition and a warm bed.
The disease is not believed to be contagious, but it can often be observed in the close proximity and shared space of public houses, inns and taverns. Once contracted, the only known treatment is rest and relaxation for a period of four to twenty weeks. The patient should avail themselves of hot, home-cooked meals, a soft bed and shelter from the elements, and the ability to rest and relax without fear of being attacked or put in danger.
