It is traditional for peerages to leave one member of their order at their commandry, or headquarters, at all times. This member is referred to as the 12th Knight and the position rotates. Because quests often take the membership away for long periods, it is not uncommon for a Twelfth Knight to serve consecutively in that capacity for months or even years, before another paladin returns to replace him. Every peerage has their own rule about how to choose the Twelfth Knight and how the position may rotate.
