Communication across the Four Lands

Long distance communication poses certain challenges for the people of Erenth. These challenges are solved in various ways.

A pigeon post is kept between every king and his lord vassals. The pigeons are trained to roost in one location specifically, but only to eat at their delivery location. This means that each bird will make a trip per day. Since two birds are kept for redundancy and the birds must be fed each day, they are usually sent morning and afternoon. This form of communication means word can spread at about 50 miles per hour at up to 1000 miles distance. While routine messages are smaller, up to 15 pages of text or 8000 words can be transmitted per trip.

Another pigeon post is kept between the Grand Temple of Peakshadow and each of the cities of Wanderhalt, Bolden, Menea, Treft, Laketon, Watersedge, Balduren, and Rath in Westrun; Ald Darios in the Provinces; Sabaha in Southrun; and Miyabe, Chiro, and Shu of Eastrun. This post is also offered to the faithful at a cost per word. The Church only has 1d2 pages of text or 500-1000 words available for sale in this way.

Druids not only have a great affinity for animal messengers, but can assume animal forms themselves. That means that word can spread from a Curate at a rate of 100 miles per hour with no real limit as to distance and location. Again, 15 pages of text or 8000 words can be transmitted this way, but that amount can be doubled or even tripled at a cost to 50% and 33% of speed.

Wizards use the sending spell to great effect. This allows the instantaneous transmission of 25 words and one reply of 25 words. However, a Wizard lord can cast a Realm spell which provides even stronger communication between other wizard lords.

The so-called Gnomey Express, or Darkling Guild employs giant ravens to deliver items from any location to any other location in the known world. There is only one Darkling Rider in every walled city of the known world. The Darkling Riders are all female gnomes who deliver packages up to 12 bote between their home base and any other location. They do not fly every day, but only upon need. They will prioritize deliveries based on the profit they stand to make.
