A Manual of Maladies: Consuming Cough

The Consuming Cough is an infectious lung disease which has existed since antiquity. The oldest unambiguously recorded case gives evidence of the disease during the Fourth Age.

It is believed that the Cough has its origins in the victims of vampires who were not been fully turned into vampires themselves.

General signs and symptoms include fever, chills, night sweats, loss of appetite, weight loss, and general fatigue. From onset to death, a patient typically has between one and sixth months, with a ongoing loss of constitution and weight throughout each successive month as well as a notable decline in Charisma.

The air of some caves and a general arid climate are both touted as remedies for the symptoms of the Consuming Cough, without promising a cure.

Curiously, the disease seems to prefer artists and may help to boost the creative output of painters, writers and musicians.
