Hedge Knights are those elevated to knighthood by a fellow knight, rather than by a nobleman. Under the ancient law of knighthood, any knight may make a knight. Such a knight, until ratified by a lord, remains a "hedge knight." They are entitled to the honors and privileges of knighthood, however they are lesser in order of precedence than a normal so-called landed knight.
While it is common to name knights after the provinces where they were knighted, or after some attribute of theirs, it is customary to name hedge knights after simple colors such as Sir Glad the Orange, or Sir Loin of Brown.
