On the Convention of Surnames

Serfs and Slaves will not have a surname but may carry the name of the manor they are attached to, or to the nearest town. 
 
Free men will have surnames that indicate their father/mother's profession. 

Adem Baker
Adem Smith
Adem Housemaster
Adem Tailor
Adem Merchant

Free men born in cities will have surname that indicate their street or neighborhood.

Adem Fleetstreet
Adem Goldway
Adem Merchantsrow

Gentry will have familial surnames unless they were elevated to that position, in which case, they will be named after their Province, or a defining attribute or a significant events.

Sir Adem [of] Reathia
Sir Adem [with the] Strong Arm 
Sir Adem [of the battle of] Riverwyld.
 
Nobility and Royalty will have familiar surnames. They are rare and established.
