The Maidens' Dance

In a clear night sky near the coast of the swirling rivers of greenish-blue light can be seen moving and dancing unpredictably above the Dagger from the Seas of Ice to the Great Sea. Sometimes rich and vibrant; sometimes barely even perceptible; these lights have been spoken of by poets and scholars from time out of mind. 

In the North they are called the Maidens' Dance, and their yearly return heralds the coming of the Valkauna to bear away the spirits of the dead Stoneborn and others who are brave enough to gain their respect. The lights also signify the fertility of the young women who will be given in marriage that year. 

In the Free Provinces they are called the Sorrow and are linked to the Departure of the Queens of the Old Empire and the Abdication of the Princes who left in search of them.

The men of mainland Westrun say that they are the evidence of the mistress of Heimos, an unnamed goddess who left him for yet another lover. She now dances between Heimos and the gods of Eastrun as a sign of the peace she keeps.

To the men who ply the seas they are simply called the Veils and are considered a good omen.
