Healing Potion

Also known as Trolls Blood, the Chronic Tonic, Green Goo, Hiringu (Sushao), Shifa Un (Khardish), Laekna (Clannic), Vinna Mi (High Speech), and Sanigiak (Urkish), little has done as much to improve the lives of all people on Erenth as the so-called, Healing Potion. Despite its colorful names in various tongues, it is not distilled, as some believe, from troll's blood, dragon's milk, the eye of newt or the wing of a bat. Rather, its active ingredient is common fen grass found in saltwater marshes across the Four Lands. 

This grass, when chopped and beaten and then allowed to sit overnight will separate into pomace and must. Once most of the pomace is removed, the must can be buried in clay jars to ferment. After a period of about six months it can be vigorously mixed with sallow bark extract and honey in the correct quantities. If certain prayers are spoken over the mixture by a pious and devout believer, they will produce a drinkable potion that is efficacious in the healing of various wounds.

While it must be the prayers which produce the potion, it is well known that this formula can be modified by simply increasing its fermentation time. A must that is allowed to sit for one year is considered extra efficacious. After two years it will provide a superior efficacy. 

In addition to the healing potions of various strengths, the base material can be mixed with ingredients other than sallow bark extract and honey to produce potions of different effect. For example, when the base is mixed with the correct quantity of Meadowsweet, the result is so-called mana wine or rejuvenation. When mixed with alloeh extract it becomes a periapt against poisons and toxins. When mixed with the milk of various flower seeds becomes concoctions which impart deep and curative sleeps. 

A lifetime could be spent perfecting this craft and many a coastal village boasts an old man or crone who has done just that.
